Capacitors are classified into two types:

  1. Polarized capacitor

  2. Non- Polarized capacitor

Capacitors are also classified into two mechanical groups:

  1. Fixed Capacitor which have fixed capacitance value.

  2. Variable Capacitor whose capacitance value varies.

Their are various types of capacitors.

  • Ceramic Capacitors

  • Film Capacitors

  • Power Film Capacitors

  • Electrolytic Capacitors

  • Paper capacitors

Here we will be briefly introducing Electrolytic and Ceramic Capacitors:

  1. Ceramic Capacitor is a capacitor with fixed value and the dielectric material used is Ceramic. It is form by composition of two or more alternating layers of ceramic and metal. These capacitors are non-polarized.They are used for high stability and low losses. The capacitance value of this capacitor are stable in reference with applied voltage, temperature and frequency.

  2. Electrolytic capacitor are polarized capacitors. This capacitor use an electrolyte to achieve a larger capacitance than other. It’s anode or positive plate is made of a metal that forms an insulating oxide layer through anodization. A solid, liquid, or gel electrolyte covers the surface of this oxide layer, serving as the cathode or negative plate of the capacitor. these capacitors are used for filtering ans smoothing the alternating voltage.
